Savannah took a deep breath and let it out slowly, turning her head again to focus on the brilliant icy blue leaves blowing gently in the breeze.
“I hate this,” she commented, only to abruptly look up at me in alarm, as if she was afraid of being misunderstood. “I’m thankful that you saved me,” she clarified. “But I just hate this system thing, and the fact that it’s putting us in danger.”
“I know,” I replied simply. “I don’t like it much either. But we have to get stronger. You have to get stronger. Otherwise we might not be so lucky next time.” My tone became somber as I lowered my voice to a whisper. “It was a really close one. Too close.”
Savannah shivered at the too recent memory, pushing more into me and thus shoving my folded wings more against the frame, as she turned to look at the Foxfire Trees endlessly burning in the darkness in a heatless blaze.
