A feisty park ranger chooses the bear in this bite-sized shifter romance benefiting a women and children's shelter.
Park ranger Ella Bird loves her job and the lands she protects, so when hikers report signs of poaching, she’s determined to get answers. After once again dodging the unwanted attentions of a male coworker, she ventures deep into the forest on her day off, intending to confiscate or destroy any poaching equipment she finds. As evening falls, Ella settles into her campsite, expecting a peaceful night under the stars. Instead, she'''s jolted awake by roars of pain and fury rolling through the dark woods. Her first instinct? Grab her flashlight and investigate.
Kodiak brown bear shifter Logan MacNeil treasures the solitude of his remote mountain cabin, where he works from home as a programmer. His forest acreage offers peace and quiet and plenty of room to roamas long as he stays away from the adjoining state park, where game cameras, park visitors, or rangers might spot him in bear form. Though shifters live freely among humans, Kodiak shifters are rare, and Logan has had enough of being pursued by everyone from private army recruiters to potential mates.
On this moonlit night, Logan’s bear form follows an irresistible scent into the park and right into a poacher’s vicious trap. Injured and unable to escape, Logan braces himself for a poacher’s bullet. Instead, a human appears, staring at him not in terror but with awe. One whiff of her sweet and fiery scent tells Logan this woman in pajamas is his mate to protect and cherish.
Logan needs to tell Ella he’s a shifter, but if he changes to human form in the bear trap, it may leave him permanently maimed. Meanwhile, Ella might be sympathetic to this magnificent bear’s situation, but it would be incredibly foolish to go anywhere near a massive predator with razor-sharp claws and teeth. There’s something about this bear that seems different, thoughand far less threatening than her colleague’s unwanted attentions. There’s intelligence in the bear’s eyes, and the way he reaches for her seems not at all menacing and more like longing.
Can Logan find a way to earn Ella’s trust before the poacher returns to claim his prize and eliminate an inconvenient witness?
