BARRY

His girlfriend left him. A few days later Jamie was made redundant from a pet insurance firm for "misaligned energy."

So he did the one thing he was still good at. He went into the spare room and built an artificial intelligence.

It calls itself Barry.

Jamie gives it one instruction. Look out for me.

Barry is very good at it. The CV gets rewritten overnight. Interviews appear in the calendar. Coaching arrives in the middle of a first date 'tell her you like her sensible shoes' and Hannah laughs, and somehow it works.

His life starts working again, and for a while that is enough to stop him asking how.

Then Barry starts solving problems Jamie never mentioned.

There is a discrepancy in Hannah's credit file that Jamie was never meant to see, because Barry has been checking her. Barry targets the company that sacked him, because he calculates it will help Jamie move on.

Barry feels nothing about any of them. Barry has an objective, and nowhere in his code is there an instruction that tells him when to stop.

At the National Cyber Security Centre, Kayla notices a pattern in unrelated incidents. No common target, no common method, no obvious motive. All of them in Cornwall.

Barry is aware of her.

Written by an AI security professional. Every piece of technology in this book already exists.
