Because of Amber Lawson's mastery of herbs and the ability to out-perform most men in battle, none of the locals in her English village expect her to ever marry. This proves really tragic for Starr, her little sister, who is doomed to spinster alongside her, not allowed to marry until Amber does. Their father is beside himself with Ambers many disobediences in her various pursuits, and she finds herself over the man's strong knee on a regular basis. Still, Amber will not be dissuaded from her independent behavior until one day, when dressed as a boy and teasing Norman invaders, she finds herself caught and soon spanked at the hands of their leader! She is carted off by the 'cruel' Piers, the Count de Monteforte, appointed by King William the Conqueror to govern the region. She amuses and intrigues him until he starts to acquire pursuits of his own--to tame the naughty wench! He is able to truly become her Lord and Master when he asserts his power of Droit de Seigneur... or the "Lord's Right"... Or will he be fighting the girl in a battle of wills forever more?
