New college graduate Tim Ramsey, 22, applies for numerous teaching jobs, but the only place that shows any interest is Farnswell, a residential school for children with disabilities. Tim signs on as a teacher's aide, and finds that the "children" range in age from 8 to 78. Farnswell is totally different from anything Tim has ever known. At first, he is disoriented by these unusual people, but as time goes by he learns many lessons from them - about himself and about humanity - and solves a long-standing mystery.
