Joe Walker's life is a mess. The former NBA prospect, and Cal alumni, shattered his ankle in college and now works as a security specialist for another Cal alumni, Jack Cloud, owner of the Pan-Pacific Railroad; but boxcar thefts of appliances and automobiles threatens his job.
Walker's father's just been thrown out of another nursing home, his ex is once again doing drugs, and Engineer Willie Allen's train just struck a stalled auto loaded with children returning from the beach. Willie Allen's spent a lifetime avoiding trouble but now his picture is on the front page of the Los Angeles Times and Walker finds himself thrust into a plot that's been fifty years in the making; one that threatens many heads of state and triggers repercussions that could easily undermine the American Government.
