Rule # 1 of being single at your cousin's destination wedding: don't fall for the hometown hero.
JADE
I wasn’t supposed to be in this wedding. I wasn’t even invited. But apparently when your cousin’s bridesmaid drops out last minute before a mountain-top destination ceremony, blood is thicker than resentment.
So here I am. Stranded in TOWN.
My date bailed.
My luggage is somewhere in Denver.
The rental car was reserved in his name, so now I don’t have wheels.
And the dress my cousin swore would be a perfect fit doesn't even zip.
So I’m standing outside the only store in town, cold, exhausted, and trying very hard to convince myself I’m not about to cry in public.
That’s when I hear a voice behind me.
‘Need a hand?’
I want to refuse, but there's no point pretending I’ll absolutely need help if I’m going to survive this wedding catastrophe.
HUNT
Weddings aren’t my thing.
I fix busted pipes, keep the generators running and make sure the resort stays standing when storms roll in.
And I definitely do not get involved with guests.
But when I overhear her trying not to fall apart, I offer her a ride. That’s what decent people do.
That’s all it was supposed to be.
Then the storm closes the roads.
Rooms fill up.
And somehow, we end up sharing the last available space on the mountain with one bed
It’s not a big deal. I tell her I’ll take the sofa. Then I hear her crying. Softly. Like she’s trying not to let the darkness win.
I know that sound.
My first instinct is to fix it. To eliminate whatever’s hurting her. And that terrifies me.
She threatens my control. The one thing I cling to more than anything else.
Because life taught me that control is how you make it home when you’re fighting someone else’s war. But getting attached to a woman who’s only here for the weekend?
That might be completely out of my control.
