My father, Atticus Wainwright III, was a pain in the butt. But dead or alive, he always got his way.

I spent my whole life trying to distance myself from my eccentric, wealthy father. I didn’t want any part of him, his three ex-wives, or my two step-sisters. My brother, and sometimes my mother, were the only family I needed.

When my father insisted on a Wainwright family gathering, I didn’t want to go. Only my brother and my curiosity convinced me to make the trip. My inquisitiveness was mostly due to the newest Mrs. Wainwright. She was rumored to be beautiful and younger than me. I guess the prospect of inheriting fifty million dollars was enough to overlook my father’s undesirable traits.

The only bright spot was discovering a woman from my past. She was the cook’s daughter, and we spent several summers together. If I remember correctly, we almost kissed one late summer night when we were seventeen.

I’d had enough after the first night and was ready to make my escape. But of course, my father interfered with that too, by dying.

Now I couldn’t leave. The fate of the family fortune was unclear since Atticus made a last-minute change to his will. There was also the question of how a healthy man suddenly dies two months after marrying his young wife?

Thanks to my father, I couldn’t leave. I had to stay until this was all sorted out.
