Andy's twin sister Anna is everything he is not: athletic, daring, and most of all, brave.
At least, that was Anna Then. Anna Now struggles with permanent brain damage, after an unexpected and severe case of meningitis. This huge change in Anna has caused a lot of changes for the Liddell family. Mom is stressed about Anna's upcoming brain surgery and has quit her job. Dad is working more and is never home. Family outings are met with stares, and inviting people over has become much more complicated.
It's hard enough dealing with problems at home but now Anna's best friend, and Andy's only friend - is acting different. It's been hard enough to accept that their trio has become a duo now that they're starting fifth grade. Andy isn't sure how to handle the feelings surrounding Anna's upcoming surgery when the two of them are barely speaking. However, with some guidance, and a new friend or two, maybe Andy can be brave enough to let go of the Then and take on the Now.
