(2012)
A novel by

Iconic designer Arthur Schoenberger falls off a mountain and leaves a hundred million dollars to his dog, a Harlequin Great Dane named Martha. His attorney Sophie Sandersen is determined to see that his will is enforced, but Martha has disappeared, and the best P.I. in Los Angeles can't seem to find him. In desperation, Sophie makes a deal with a strange boy arrested in Palmdale among a pack of wild dogs: Sophie will save Lester and his canine pals from the pound, if he can find Martha. The Dog Boy tracks the Harlequin Great Dane to Venice Beach, where she has been taken in by a schizophrenic tarot-reader, Janus Ornovsky, who depends on the dog to keep her on her meds. When Janus takes in Lester too, he must decide whether to turn the dog over to Arthur's lawyers or to help Janus keep herself sane.

The Heartbreak Dog is a novel about characters drawn from the tabloids, where hope and despair appear side by side, caption and column inch. Yet despite the perversity of their secret selves each character finds a reason to change in the endless collision of lives that comprise the cities by the sea.

Richard Fliegel is the author of several novels published by Bantam and Simon and Schuster. He has also written for television, including Star Trek: the Next Generation. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
