A perfect Christmas story. A perfect book store, bringing the community together. A perfect, loving family, with a perfect little girl, Annie.
That is, until you look a little deeper.Notice the worry lines on Benjamin's face when he is doing the accounts. There is also the small matter of the despicable Gibson family, making trouble in the neighbourhood in all manner of ways.
But before everything starts going wrong, the Briar family welcomes Eddie Gibson into their fold; a memory that will always stay with him. Annie, who loves books almost more than life itself, realises that this boy is merely a victim of his circumstances. Besides, with the heart of a writer, she has more things to think about than holding grudges against the boy who used to pelt snowballs at her.
Soon however, both the Gibsons and the Briars lives implode, and everything changes in an instant. Little Eddie is facing life on his own, and the Briars are thrown into a debtor's prison. It doesn't take long for one of the prison guards to turn his attention to Annie, and he makes her days as difficult as he possibly can. Besides everything that is thrown at this family, they still do their best to serve, and to stir a love for books in those around them.
A chance encounter with another prisoner steers Annie and her family yet again on a different path, but just as they start to hope for better days, fate once again smiles cruelly upon them.
