First published in 1884, "Inferno" forms part of Galdos' series of novels about contemporary Madrid social life and the Bringas family, inspired by the novels of Balzac and Zola. The story follows the fortunes of Amparo, a destitute orphan who is singled out by the opulent Augustin.
