At 3:17 AM, Jamison Locke wakes in a roadside motel in Baker, California, with no memory of checking in.

Three words are written on his wrist in permanent marker: DO NOT FORGET AGAIN.

On the bathroom mirror, in his own handwriting: You made it out. But it will try again.

On the bedside table sits a manila folder labeled with a word that means nothing to him — and everything to whoever he was yesterday. OBLONGUM. Inside: a hand-drawn map of a desert road ending in a circle, and a typed note. You asked to come here. You insisted. By the time you read this, you will have forgotten why.

Locke has spent twenty years turning fear into procedure. He knows what the evidence is telling him: something out in the Mojave took a piece of his life. And there is only one way to get it back.

You go to the place it happened.

Two days later, investigators find his car at the end of an unpaved road. The engine cold. The door open. A single trail of footprints crossing the sand — for twelve hundred feet.

Then they stop.
