The Moments Betweenor what happened in the moments Jane Austen left untold?
I have always written close to the Pride and Prejudice canon. Even when my stories have ventured into greater romance or anguish, they have remained close to the spirit or the plot of Austen’s novel.
The Moments Between may be my closest work to the canon yet. It is also a first for me: a collection of five Pride and Prejudice variations in novella form.
My intention was not to invent essentially different situations, but to explore the moments where Austen chose silence, told us only a little, or mentioned an event in passing. When did Darcy fall in love with Elizabeth, and when did she fall in love with him? What happened between them when they met at Pemberley? What did Elizabeth feel on the road to Longbourn after learning of Lydia’s flight?
These stories fit within the timeline of Pride and Prejudice. They do not change its events. By giving the quieter moments more room, I hope they offer another dimension to the story we know.
