A novel by

For over a year, the Up and Down ranch has been plagued by a series of thefts, mainly cattle; but now the foreman, Hard Ross, has lost the mare he raised from a filly. Then a new owner rolls up to the ranch in his red automobile: "Fancy" Jim Sherrod, a city guy and first-class dandy - and instant laughing stock of the cowhands. Hard Ross isn't amused, however, and decks his new boss as soon as he receives an order demeaning to his respected position. He's headed for the road - until Sherrod strikes a deal with him: stay for a month and help him run the ranch until he can get the swing of it. But there's more to Fancy Jim Sherrod than meets the eye - as cowhands and rustlers alike will soon discover, when the bullets start to fly...
