Brought together by chance business connections, an English and a German family are embroiled in the conflicts of the Nazi regime and suffer the consequences for many years afterwards. Michael Strang watches his childhood friends, Herta, Heinz and Karl Sattler struggle with their own personal obsessions - whether of love, friendship or nationalism - and with the traumas of the anti- Semitic purges. Each tries a different solution but none can be free of the past. Michael too finds his own antipathies revived when his son takes a Jewish wife.
This is a sensitive study of war and the guilt of war - of the degradations which affect some totally, some partially. Do these varying reactions depend on personality or on experience? This novel is an absorbing analysis of the interplay of personal and political forces on a group of individuals bound up with events far beyond their control.
