For Grace Cousin's life has always been predictable. Never married, working in the office of a financial advisor, her mantra at age fifty-five is "certain contentment beats out the uncertainty of passion any day of the week." But events beyond her control turn her life upside down. Her father dies leaving her mother, who suffers from dementia, alone. Grace moves in with her, but her sister Lolly is angered when she asks for help with the expense of hiring daytime care. Lolly argues they should put their mother in a nursing home which Grace vehemently opposes. In order to afford a companion for her
mother, Grace decides to rent out her townhouse which now sits empty to Alex Stanfield, a hydrologist in town on a one-year contract. In the meantime, Grace's boss, Preston Benedict, begins to regale Grace with tales of his imploding marriage, and when both Preston and Alex start to vie for her attention, she finds herself in a position she never expected. Dramatic events threaten to permanently end her former serene life and test her courage and resolve.
