War drums beat. Winter winds howl.
A year after the events of the Unity Tournament fiasco in Nevis, Aldric falls back into a familiar pattern: the Empress’ Demon, her knife in the dark. But even a legend is only one man. He cannot fight a war for her, much as he tries, and Umel’s agents have spread far and wide.
At best, the war is a stalemate. At worst, Rhagia is losing in the shadows.
But Aldric’s students are not blind. They learned from him, after all, and they share their professor’s curse of responsibility. Seeing their homeland under threat and their precious teacher at his wit’s end, they won’t simply watch. The enemy spots a new weakness and pounces, and only Aldric can be sent to stop it… leaving his students to do what they feel they must.
And on top of all that, the Beast within Aldric still hungers.
Aldric was forged in the fires of war. Now his students might be, too. And even in the dead of winter, unless they can end things, the entire world might burn.
