Surrendering to the inevitable after a bit of drama, Zelda agrees to be the consort of Orex, but she has some requests. She never imagined a Hmrain would want to include her daughter in his family, but he was willing to provide for her in a contract, so she knew he was serious.

Zelda has worked at the colony for two years, getting ready for the mining and forestry that would begin to shape the world. When she receives notice that her daughter’s vessel is heading toward Aten, she knows it’s time to get going. She has only one method of leaving the colony, so she engages it. She makes herself a target, and raiders take the bait.
Orex looks at the damage done to his colony offices and checks the casualty list. Only one person is missing, and when he checks her file, he nearly growls in fury. He looks at the pale and weak companion next to him and understands why others spoke so highly of their consorts. They were actually consort class. After some internal debate, he releases his companion from her contract and sends her to further her education so she can find a new career. With that done, he follows Zelda and tries to get to her before she’s sold.
Being a single mother during the end of the world had been tough, but she knows what she’s made of now, and no one is getting between her and her daughter. Not again.
