A friend dies suddenly. It is a devastating blow to Detective Investigator Jim Aitken, and it quickly becomes apparent that the strands of Gordon Pearson's double-life will have some unexpected consequences for those who knew him best. When the owner of a local takeaway restaurant is found brutally murdered, Aitken is forced to put his personal issues aside, and soon realises that his victim had spent a lifetime building a list of people with potential grudges against him. Then, when the owner of a warehouse in Kilmarnock dies in mysteriously similar circumstances to Pearson, Aitken has to consider whether the three deaths are connected.
