A paid debt. An older ledger. A creditor with no name and no floor.

The Crown's levy is settled. The pans are registered. Brinemark sleeps behind walls of rose salt and Ruck Amsel, for the first time in two lives, has nothing left to owe.

Then the System surfaces an entry that predates the Crown. It predates Saphene, who worked these pans before the records began and stopped mid-sentence and never wrote down why. It predates every registry on this coast. Principal: unrecorded. Creditor: unrecorded. Term: the length of a Long Tide. Status: accruing.

The first debt had a number. He paid it to the copper. This one will not tell him what it wants. Out on the tidal flats, something drew a spiral no hand could reach to make, and watched him find it, and walked back into the fog.

He has a working saltworks, a boy learning his letters, and a friend worth sitting by a fire with. He also has an obligation older than everything he thought he understood about this coast.

Brine rewards a patient man. He is going to need all of it.
