This book has drawn on scholarly and historical sources in the first instance and then has attempted to illustrate the material by turning to novels and other 'realistic' accounts. It can therefore be seen as a synthesis of the unadorned Confucian presentation of the facts and the more colorful flights of fancy of the Taoists. The first section, offers a background of history and a 'panoramic' survey of the subject. The heart of the book, however, is the second section which, apart from the detailed study of the sex practices and customs of the Chinese, covers much that would be contained in the traditional pillow books of the bedchamber art.
