Embarak burned ten winters ago. Someone beneath it lived long enough to leave a message.
Callen Nasinth has been home only three days when a Pyrin delegation arrives carrying a strip of fire-blackened copper recovered from the ruined city’s Archive. It began as an ordinary clerk’s tool. After the fire, a desperate hand cut four words across its face:
The flame carried south.
The strip also bears the private counting marks of Kiran, Nora’s dead father—proof that he was inside the Archive before it fell, and that he went below after it burned.
To learn what Kiran found there, Callen joins an expedition four hundred miles south with Amara, ten-year-old Nora, and people with competing claims on whatever survived. Among them is an Ember Court Purifier whose doctrine says Callen’s healed bond cannot exist.
At Embarak, fire dies in sealed rooms. The drift falls silent. Beneath the dead Archive, the expedition discovers the work of ordinary people who kept recording and repairing after the city above them ended.
Then the old work begins to fail.
To bring them home, Callen must read the hands of the dead, trust bonds no tradition accepts, and complete a repair made from whatever its builders had left.
