July Truly has made an artform out of running away from her problems. She fled her southern roots right out of high school, escaped bad jobs and friendships, and now, after a failed engagement, the uncompromising young woman has retreated to East Pines, North Carolina.

Thomas Jay is trying to keep his mother’s touring business going. After her sudden passing, he is reworking his dreams and learning to live with her loss. July and Thomas Jay share an immediate dislike for one another, but without any other places to run, July accepts a temporary living arrangement with the man. July's sharp, uncompromising temperament is in direct contrast to Thomas Jay's kind and overprotective nature. Despite their polar opposite personalities, they agree to fake date in order to simplify their situation. But, the two of them begin to form a truce as they discover past histories, navigate old and new trials, and blend their very different lives together. July learns to let go of her need to be in control of everything, and Thomas Jay realizes that he’s got a heart for more than just the water.
