A frontier marksman takes aim against a Redcoat rifleman in this Revolutionary War thriller.
More than a year after independence has been declared, the American Revolution still rages, often pitting Loyalists against Patriots. In the summer of 1777, the British general Lord Howe decides to move against Philadelphia and the Continental Congress. Capturing the patriots’ capital could put an end to the rebellion. Soon, hundreds of ships carrying the massive army of British and Hessian troops sail from New York harbor to the upper reaches of Chesapeake Bay, where Howe begins his campaign against Philadelphia. Unleashed from their ships, Redcoats and Hessian mercenaries pillage the peaceful countryside of Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.
General George Washington’s ragged Continental Army must confront the enemy. His soldiers come from all walks of life, moved to fight for Liberty. One of these patriots is Caleb Cole, a buckskin-clad hunter and trapper from the frontier who brings his skill with a long rifle to bear against the enemy. But the British have their own marksmen armed with the new breech-loading Ferguson rifles. One of these marksmen is Lieutenant Marwood, an ambitious young officer who sees his talent with a rifle as a means for advancement.
Again and again, Caleb and the Continentals will find themselves confronting deadly British riflemen at Cooch’s Bridge and the Battle of the Brandywine. After surviving the harsh winter at Valley Forge, a final confrontation takes place at the Battle of Monmouth, where the frontier marksman will call upon all his skill with a rifle while General Washington rallies the troops to turn the tide of the battleand the war.
