Gene was a sound sleeper. Not much woke him once he was out. Elder Russon probably would have made it out the door had he not bumped a chair with his suitcase. The chair scraped across the floor, and Gene was suddenly sitting straight up, confused about what was happening. He saw the shadow, near the door, and even in the dark knew that Elder Russon had his clothes on. "What's going on?" he said.

"Nothing. I'll see you."

The door was coming open, and Gene responded instantly. He threw back his feather tick, jumped up, grabbed for Russon. He caught a handful of suit coat, then an arm, and he pulled. Russon spun, fought to yank his arm away, but he still had the suitcase in one hand. Geen drove foward suddenly, clamped both arms around Russon, jerked him away from the door. But the suitcase clattered across the floor and the elders stumbled in the dark and fell. They thudded onto the floor, both on their shoulders. Russon was still twisting, trying to roll away. "You can't make me stay," he said. "I can leave if I want to."

"No. No, you can't. Not like this."

This isn't the way his mission was supposed to go. But Elder Gene Thomas has a lot to learn - about himself and about life. So do Kathy and Diane, both away from home for college, and Hans, whose attempt to help his friend escape East Germany has tragic consequences. Troubled Waters continues the gripping story of life in sixties for the Thomas grandchildren, a time of growth and self-discovery, of facing tough decisions and figuring out how to get along in a rapidly changing world. This second volume of the Hearts of the Children series will go straight to your heart!
