1890s Chelsea, London

Clarice Lawrence's comfortable existence is shattered when her family receives a disturbing letter about a long-lost relative.

Before its arrival, she was a young independent Victorian woman from a self-made household and her feisty ambitions can't be stifled.

The letter changes all that.

Her aunt's tragic death means an orphaned illegitimate nephew is in need of a home. Her haughty mother despises the shameful boy. As her father departs on urgent business, he advises Clarice to put her ambition aside. Now, family duty must come first.

Her problems spiral when the canny lad, used to surviving on Whitechapel's mean streets, flees the orphanage before she can collect him.

To find the boy in the East End's squalid tenements, Clarice must seek the help of strangers. Every tidbit of information brings her closer, but not close enough.

As her fruitless search rumbles on, she fears disappointing her beloved father. The boy's death on her watch will forever stain her conscience.

But if she can find him it will change her life forever, especially when an unexpected yet captivating stranger helps her along the way.
