The Pioneer Herd

(1937)
A novel by

Drought and death-dealing winters have forced the owner of the T Slash, John "Bumble" Beebe, to drive his cattle to distant grazing lands in Wyoming. But disaster strikes in the form of a devastating flash flood when Bumble takes the advice of Red Water Slim, the cocksure guide of the journey, over that of old Clay Robinson, the trusty ranch foreman, and leaves the herd near a creek bed overnight instead of taking it up to the bluffs. As the lone survivor, Bumble marshals the remainder of the herd - only to be arrested by a local sheriff who mistakes him for Joe Green, a rustler he's been hunting down. When Bumble escapes to ride the outlaw trail, in pursuit of the real gang of rustlers, he has no inkling that the recent past is about to catch up with him...
