An analysis of the countryside in 1982 based on the Suffolk village of Stowlangtoft, with emphasis on the affects of agriculture on a rural landscape, the development of pig- keeping from the middle ages to the 1980s, rural conditions at the turn of the 20th century, the Edwardian period with its disadvantages for the rural poor and structural upheaval for the landowning classes, the evolution of agrarian capitalism and the forces of destructiveness inherent in man.
