Detective Lalo Sanchez is back, teaming up with retired lawyer Cate Stokes to take on a new case from the Defender Project, a non-profit firm specializing in wrongful convictions. As they begin investigating the murder that sent Jez Landon to Florida's infamous Lowell Correctional women's prison, they are approached by a desperate neighbor, Rachel Lane who begs them to find her husband's killer. Against Cate's better judgement, she and Lalo agree to divide their efforts and work the two cases individually. Lalo sets out to find out who killed Jez' ex-boyfriend, Gar Reddick while Cate takes on the task of proving Rachel's husband, Frank did not commit suicide.

Lalo doesn't have much to go on. The field of suspects who potentially killed Gar Reddick is limited. Only four residents and a counselor from Sarah's House, a shelter for trafficked and battered women were in Spanish Point the day Reddick was murdered there. One of those suspects is already dead from a heroin overdose and none of the others has an iron-clad alibi. Lalo, armed only with one unidentified fingerprint from the murder weapon works diligently to narrow the field.

Cate's task is even more daunting. Lacking a murder weapon, fingerprints or DNA, She has an uphill battle to convince anyone that Frank Lane did not kill himself. Details of Lane's financial fraud emerge, suggesting any of his long list of wealthy clients had motive enough to murder him. As the investigation deepens, Cate even begins to suspect her client, Lane's own wife for shooting him in cold blood.

Packed with intrigue and plot twists, SPANISH POINT proves once again that Janet Heijens is a master at her craft.
