Fans of Dilly Court and Rosie Goodwin will be swept away by this moving historical saga.

A love tested by the waves, a life shaped by sacrifice.

Dorah has two loves: sailing on the open sea, and her husband Samuel. She discovers the first as a child when her father, a skipper on a Brixham trawler, ‘follows the fish’ from Devonshire to the east coast of England, taking his family with him. But it is the mid-1800s and, as a woman, Dorah must turn her back on the sea.

Samuel promises to buy her a boat, but the realities of a hard life intervene, and while he is at sea, forming close friendships in the face of extreme dangers, Dorah must stay on land caring for their ever-growing family. Meanwhile, Samuel is struggling with a huge loss of his own and a sense that he has let Dorah down, leading him to make a fateful decision.

With Samuel gone from her life, Dorah does what she can to rear her family. Then, as the years pass, her house empties until only her youngest daughter Minnie is left. Now she decides it is time to tell her story.
