Farad, past Stravad Leader, cannot fathom why he's outlived everyone he ever loved, until the dead Lord of the Nazarien, Talar Eldralin, summons him through the shard of the Karhartadon emerald. Talar urges him to embark on a journey that will take him across Samar to the strange land of the Delphi, where he will rescue Talar's great grandson - a boy with no name and no knowledge of his auspicious lineage. Farad's one saving grace - Talar promises him a champion.
