Without a Trace

(1991)
(The first book in the Detectives Millson and Scobie Crime Thrillers series)
A novel by

Eighty-year-old Maisie Brown disappeared during Tanniford's annual fete. Chief Inspector Millson suspected Maisie's stepfather. Millson disliked stepfathers. His own daughter had one and he resented having to arrange with him and his ex-wife when he could see her. Tanniford lay in the bend of a river, confined there by railway line. The only road out was the railway bridge. The local police had closed the road to traffic while the fete was on and no vehicle left the village between 2 o'clock and 6 that day. This convinced Millson that Maisie had been abducted by someone in the village and she was still there - dead or alive. The villagers believed a stranger had taken her. In a way, they were both right.
