At forty-seven, Monique is tired of being the person everybody calls when they need something. So she rents a lake house for a week with plans to read, relax, and enjoy being responsible for absolutely nobody.
Then she meets Kairo.
He lives beneath the water, has eight tentacles, and doesn’t understand most human things. He does understand that he likes Monique. And when Kairo decides something belongs in his life, he sees no reason to pretend otherwise.
He brings her fish. Leaves perfect stones at her door. Notices the crochet hook she’s using is too small and makes her another one.
Monique came to the lake because she wanted to know what it felt like to put herself first.
