The Comanche raided the Stewart homestead in 1861. Mary Beth Stewart tried to escape with her two younger sister out the backdoor but was soon captured. They killed her mother and older brother and she knew not what happened to all her siblings. So Mary soon had to learn to adjust. She was bitter and angry with the Comanche so Mary was treated as an adult slave, because she refused a Comanche mother. She was traded to the Kiowas where after several different villages when she ended up in Running Deeer's village. This is where she met Buck, the handsome young brave she would slave for.
