They summoned a hero. They got a Ranger. Now the crown has a golden champion, and a quest to kill the wrong one.
Trace Veeran came down out of the mountains harder than he went up.
Poison can't touch him. Corruption slides off him. The Eightfold Spear Path has opened four of its circles to him, and the people who run this world have started to notice. So the court did what courts do. It painted itself a champion: young, handsome, Level 25. Then it handed him a System quest to erase the "false" one.
Trace isn't the champion. He's the one they threw away.
His crew is waiting: a healer, a shield, a boy with quick hands, and an archer who won't explain his name. There's a war coming down the road behind them, and it isn't raiders this time. The Dominion is marching in columns, under commanders who have learned his name. Someone has paid a crown's ransom to put him in the ground. And the higher he climbs, the clearer the real fight gets: not the army at the wall, but the thing underneath every level, every kill, every gift he gives away.
What he's willing to carry. And what it costs to be the last thing standing between his people and the dark.
What to expect: a full-party wager dungeon that makes you choose; a siege broken ten men at a time; two masters of the spear; a guild founded on a dead friend's joke; stat sheets, level-ups, and loot that cost something; a hero who is earned, not chosen. No harem. Ends on a cliffhanger. Book 4 is already written.
Burden of Choice is Book 3 of Ashes of Vaeltharion, a grimdark LitRPG progression fantasy about a sober Army Ranger, a spear with a history, and power that always sends a bill. Start with Burden of Fate.
Genre: Science Fiction
