Last Dance with You

(1986)
A novel by

At 82, the eminent archaeologist Richard Fox drowns himself among the orange peel and litter of the oily waters off the Isle of Wight.
His son Peter returns for the funeral, and against his better judgement he stays on at The Round House in an effort to come to terms with the father who had always overshadowed him. But the family house, with all the gathered papers and memories, is a suffocating mausoleum. Surrounded by the ageing remnants of a life, Peter feels himself sinking. Even Nicola, the young and efficient biographer who arrives ostensibly to reveal the real Richard Fox, and Kate, the young artist who was his father's protegee, are not enough to save Peter from torturous brooding. 'If Peter learns anything about his father, it's that he went to his death irascible, opinionated, fully himself.
