He came to abandon his inheritance. Instead, he found a stranger tied to its memory.

Fitzwilliam Darcy comes to Northmere with a single intention: to conclude the affairs of an estate long absent from his life. The house has stood unused for years, its rooms closed, its history carefully ignored—an inheritance he means to put behind him.

Elizabeth Bennet arrives at Northmere on her father’s arm, expecting no more than a brief respite before continuing their journey. When Mr. Bennet’s health falters beneath the strain of travel, departure becomes impossible. Elizabeth must remain—and Darcy, by duty and inclination, must open a house he had meant only to close.

The arrangement is meant to be temporary. Instead, it alters the shape of every day. Elizabeth attends her father with quiet vigilance; Darcy finds his careful plans interrupted by obligations he cannot evade. In close quarters, formality gives way to observation, and observation to judgment—often mistaken, never indifferent.

Northmere itself offers little explanation. Certain rooms remain closed. Certain remnants linger where neither expects them. Elizabeth notices what Darcy has learned to pass over; Darcy resists what Elizabeth is unwilling to ignore. Between them, avoidance and attention begin to clash, drawing both into an intimacy neither intended.

As the days lengthen, what was meant to be endured becomes difficult to leave behind. To part from Northmere unchanged—and from one another—they must confront what has been long deferred, and decide whether the cost of remaining is greater than the cost of walking away.
