KAIT

Rule one of a small town: never let them see you bleed.

So when my boyfriend of four years got engaged to someone else six months after dumping me — someone very petite, very polished, very blonde, very not me — I did what any dignified woman would do. I fled to Chicago, borrowed a dress that didn’t fit, and flashed an entire hotel bar in my emergency granny panties.

A stranger blocked the view with his own body and pretended to be my husband to get rid of a creep.
He was kind. Funny. Had questionable opinions about cilantro.

I was thirty seconds from kissing him when I found out he was in the middle of his own bachelor party.

Fine. Whatever. I had a bar to run and fifty thousand dollars left to save before the old Lake View Resort was finally, finally mine.

Or at least, that was the plan.

SAM

I got left at the altar, in the ballroom of the hotel I was supposed to inherit. My father took it as confirmation of everything he’d always suspected about me.

So I bought a dead 1950s resort in a town I’d never been to, on the word of one friend, and have never been happier or more spectacularly unqualified in my life.

There’s just one problem. The woman who runs the bar in town is the woman from that hotel bar in Chicago — and she looks at me like I personally set fire to her childhood.

Turns out, I did. I just didn’t know it.

So I send her cilantro. She throws it away. I keep sending it.

Now Kait's best friend is getting married, and the two of them are thrown together, planning the wedding of the year at Sam's resort. Throw in a blizzard, a stuck car, a sketchy basement room neither of them should have opened, and it's all either of them can do to resist the magnetic pull that's been bringing them closer for over a year.

But Sam still hasn’t told her the truth about who he used to be — or why some mornings he can’t get out of bed at all.
As for Kait? Well, she's slowly forgetting why she hated the guy in the first place.
