Nigel’s mission in Belize, to keep a beautiful Cuban physician safe from aggressors, was pleasurable, but ending. He often entertained becoming an expat, but a small internal voice kept saying, ‘Go home.’ But where? Key West? That’s where he berthed his sailboat, MisChief. It’s where he had carved out a nice, comfortable groove for himself. Maybe too comfortable. No, the pull was deeper than that. It was Port St. Joe.
It’s been over two years since Nigel sailed away, looking for a reset, a new beginning, and a fresh start to his life. And he was successful, but… he missed his St. Joe family. Would it be the same, though? What would he find waiting? He was eager to find out.
However, the excitement and enthusiasm of a joyous return is never a sure bet. It can be turned upside down, and in a breath, Nigel witnessed his delight, elation, and bliss dissolve away.
It all came crashing down as he and his Bronco coasted to a stop outside his St. Joe cottage. He took in the scene. It wasn’t the homecoming he had planned. As his heart sank, he thought, I shouldn’t have come back. But he came back, and his next step was a difficult one. Dial 911.
