Sangue knows they're there.
Nobody in the bowl valley blames Skyler for drawing the enemy's attention their way by rescuing prisoners from a military camp farther north. But Skyler can't help but feel the responsibility of bringing danger down on his loved ones and hundreds of innocent townspeople from Emery, especially when it caused his best friend and her family to flee north to escape that danger. He wants to do what he can to make up for that.
Kristy has other ideas; getting further along in her pregnancy by the day, she can't bear to have her son out risking his life. Not when she already has to fear for her husband as he leads the volunteers defending their new home in the high mountains.
Tom faces the seemingly hopeless task of keeping the valley hidden from encroaching Sangue. Outnumbered, outgunned, and dealing with enemies with years of experience fighting their brutal war, what can a few dozen half-trained men and women do?
