Britain, 393AD
The Roman Empire is on the brink of a Civil War between the Eastern Emperor Theodosius and the usurper Eugenius, placed upon the Western Empire throne by Arbogastes, the traitorous Western Magister Militum. Fearing that the Duke of the Britons, the senior military commander in Britain, who is loyal to Theodosius, could take the Roman forces under his command and invade Gaul, Arbogastes sends his agent, Caidrus, to destabilize the province and prevent this from happening.
Once more Flavius Vitulasius and his friends and fellow Magistriani agents, Siward and Lucius, are called upon to deal with the threat that Caidrus and his henchmen and women pose. Soon Flavius and his friends are embroiled in the mayhem which ensues. Plots are soon discovered to coerce the Duke of the Britons into declaring for the usurper by threatening the life of his daughter Melania and others to incite internal warfare in the province by stirring up old tribal enmities. As one plot after another is put down, another one springs into life.
Chilling information then comes from a former agent and one time friend of theirs that an active plot exists to kidnap the daughters of the Dowager Empress Elen, the widow of Magnus Maximus, to force her to support Eugenius and endorse his claim to the throne. Before Elen can be warned of the plot, the dreaded Attacotti, bloodthirsty barbarian raiders recruited by Caidrus attack Segontium and abduct Aelia, Elen's youngest daughter.
Flavius, Siward and Lucius find themselves on a rescue mission, travelling to Erin where danger awaits them from enemies old and new. With the fate of Britain and the Empire hanging in the balance, it is down to Flavius, Siward and Lucius, to save the day, but will they be able to?
