Bella Richmond always lived the gay social life of a well-to-do young lady in London. The death of her parents leads her to undertake the long, arduous journey to Lochan Castle to meet her Scottish relations. Her cousin Mairi welcomes her joyously but Bella is shocked by the poverty she finds and the petty restrictions imposed by the English nine years after the Jacobite defeat at Culloden. Mairi's father wants her to marry Ian MacFraser, despite the fact that she is in love with his brother, Hugh. Bella soon finds herself deeply involved with their affairs.
