The Royal Naval College at Greenwich houses a number of important relics relating to Nelson, hero of the Battle of Trafalgar. Pride of place is given to the Admiral's coat - the very garment that Nelson wore at the time of his death, and which has for nearly a century been kept on display in the magnificent Painted Hall. One night, however, Anne Pethebridge, niece of Admiral Sir George Constable, causes a great deal of trouble when she suggests that she will dance at the naval ball with any of the young lieutenants who succeeds in stealing the coat. What begins as a light-hearted jest ends in tragedy and a call to Scotland Yard - and Inspector Margetson finds himself investigating a case not only of theft, but also of murder...

Edith Murray Keate was a novelist and historian, whose scholarly knowledge of Greenwich and its historic buildings is showcased in this golden age murder mystery, originally published in 1936.
