Charley Bates is ten years old and an orphan. Glad to escape his tough childhood, he answers the call of the recruiting sergeant and becomes a drummer boy in the Crimean War. When the horrors of war become too much, he cries and reveals he is really a girl - Charlotte. So Charley becomes a nurse.
