Where have all the missing gone?Sgt. Bobby Danforth, lead hostage negotiator for the San Diego Police Department, finds his life in turmoil. His wife of more than twenty-five years died a year ago, and not long ago on his last negotiation, all the hostages and the shooter died. He decides to retire, and as he is contemplating what to do next, he receives a letter from a lawyer telling him that his estranged brother back in Parkersburg, West Virginia has died. Along with the letter is a journal from his brother, Jason.

Bobby and Jason haven’t talked in more than fifteen years, and Bobby didn’t know his brother had married, or that he had a son named after him named Bobby. Jason’s son Bobby disappeared in an area of Mountwood Park, West Virginia, known as ‘The Dark,’ a forest so dense no sunlight can be seen within it. Smoke slowly seeps from the ground due to the coal deep below the surface, burning in an ongoing fire.

Jason’s journal asks Bobby to return home, to find out what happened to his son, as well as the many people who have gone missing in The Dark during the last 150 years. Bobby does so, and as he investigates The Dark, he is astonished at all the people who have gone into The Dark, who are never seen again.

Along the way, Bobby finds love again with Kat Robinson and is offered a Lieutenant’s job by the Sheriff. He will find two brothers living in a holler, but are they involved? Will Bobby be able to discover the truth behind the disappearances, or are some things never meant to be discovered?
