The Idalina, with Yarmian Eventyde aboard, sails for Garroon, where Captain Tiresian hopes to find his missing 'uncle', the former Port Lord, Chancellane.

Chancellane's daughter, Damaris, now wears the diadem, yet rumours abound of a shadowy masked figure, Meleghanna of Maharra, a mystic healer said to have inveigled herself into Garroon's court and now rumoured to be lurking behind the throne, wielding untold influence over the Port Lord.

Tiresian believes Meleghanna is a witch, perhaps holding Chancellane hostage to increase her hold over Damaris and Garroon, and he wants Yarmian to positively identify and then destroy the mysterious masked Maharran.

The trouble is, Yarmian knows little to nothing about the lesser mystics, witches, warlocks, and sorcerers, and has no idea whether Meleghanna is in fact a witch, or a genuine mystic healer from Maharra. And with diplomatic relations between Garroon and Arpane at breaking point, and the threat of despotism and open war overshadowing life in what was once the happiest of places, he doesn't have much time to find out...
