December 15, 1901: After a nasty night of storms along the eastern seaboard, residents of a small New Jersey barrier island awoke to the sounds of snapping, ripping, and cracking along the beachfront. Was it distant lightning? Thunder? When they finally got out to inspect, they were met by the stunning sight of a huge four-masted merchant vessel wallowing in the surf just yards offshore. Shipwreck!
The grounding of the Sindia -- sailing from Japan to New York City in time for the Christmas selling season -- has been the subject of speculation and conspiracy theories for over a century. Generations of beachgoers watcher her shatter and sink until the encroaching sand finally swallowed every trace. How did she come to land here of all places? What was she really carrying? And who came to profit from her demise?
The Sindia Promise spins a fictional tale of one man with the answer. Theo Cuthbert, a simple sailor, hears the deathbed declaration and plea of his best friend aboard: They're' yours now, Theo. Take them and live a life. In his struggle to honor the promise he makes to his friend, Cuthbert becomes a thief and an entrepreneur, a killer and a lifesaver, a husband, a father, and a heartbroken lover. Surrounded by the coastal beauty of the sea and marsh and pristine waterways of America's mid-Atlantic states, one man wrestles with a changing world in a new century and his moral obligation to it.
