Jackie's New York
(2024)(The fourth book in the Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis Collection series)
A novel by Mercedes King
She longed for a greater purpose and her own identity...but never envisioned the trail she would blaze.
After the passing of her second husband, Jackie knew one thing for certain--she didn't want to get married again. Thanks to a hefty settlement from Onassis's estate, her life-long worries about money were over, which gave her a freedom she'd never known.
Jackie also had no intention of slipping into the typical role of a wealthy Manhattanite of overseeing charities and embarking on regular shopping sprees along Fifth Avenue. Instead, she follows the advice of a friend and reaches out to another longtime friend and publisher of Viking Press, Tom Guinzburg, to see if he might take a chance at hiring her as an editor. Tom readily agrees. Although Jackie has her own reservations about entering the workforce, she soon finds that editing suits her. However, a book comes along that jeopardizes her position and newly solidified reputation, and Jackie must make a difficult professional decision.
Through the years, Jackie's children mature into adults and face their own challenges, from academics to falling in love and enduring heartbreak. Thier need for Jackie shifts and changes, and though she struggles at times to strike the perfect balance, she's proud of them.
On her own journey of self-discovery, Jackie finds love with an old friend, Maurice Tempelsman. Though he isn't considered conventionally handsome, he makes Jackie happier than she's ever been in a romantic relationship. But extenuating circumstances prevent them from being together fully.
In every phase of Jackie's life, her complicated relationship with her sister Lee Radziwill remains a constant. The depth of their connection becomes strained, though, when Lee reveals a long-held secret that threatens to destroy their sisterhood forever. Ultimately, Jackie must decide if she can forgive Lee or if the betrayal is too much for her to overcome.
