Two weeks. That was the contract.
Fly to the greyest planet in the arc, pull an engine core out of a dead ship, collect stupid money, come home. I'm the guy who leaves. It's the one thing I'm better at than talking, and I'm the best talker in three systems.
Then a widow in a grey veil sat through fifty-one minutes of me at full output, said four words, and took the floor out from under my whole life.
She doesn't laugh at my jokes. She waits me out. Nobody has ever waited me out.
Her world says she has to grieve a man she never loved for two more years. Her family is stealing from her while she does it. And I found something in her husband's shipyard that changes what everyone thinks they know about him.
I could still leave.
So why am I still here?
Genre: Science Fiction
